What's Accompanying Me This Afternoon

I am playing this in the background as I am getting my work done this afternoon ..

Not a bad accompaniment since this is National Bible Month after all. And basically Jeffry S. Tjandra, Franky Sihombing, and Wawan Yap are the only Christian artistes that perform in Malay / Indonesian that I actually have albums of. They can be quite difficult to come by this side of the Nusantara.

I'll be migrating this blog over to an upgraded version to fix the problem with the commenting and publishing over the weekend. I haven't decided with Wordpress or Movable Type yet, so its still a coin flip. Let's see how it goes.

Oh yeah, I just realised I forgot to wish all my Muslim friends and readers :

Selamat Hari Raya

Facilitating Training And Collaboration Online

I was recently asked by a friend of mine to work on a proposal to set up their website and one of the elements I was to include is a tool that would facilitate real time discussion and the sharing of tools and resources as well as training tools. Having been involved in some level of marketing online over the last few years, one of the first few things that came to my mind were web conferencing and webinars.

What exactly is a webinar? Wikipedia defines webinars as:

A neologism to describe a specific type of web conference. It is typically one-way, from the speaker to the audience with limited audience interaction, such as in a webcast. A webinar can be collaborative and include polling and question & answer sessions to allow full participation between the audience and the presenter.
One of the disadvantages I've found working in collaborative working on an online environment are the limitations that e-mails, and instant messaging applications like Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, etc, in demonstrating concepts or explaining more complex issues. In a face to face environment, I'd have the advantage of being able to use whiteboards, mahjong paper, LCD projectors and more to highlight points. Coupled with the fact that one would actually be dealing with people face to face, discussion and Q & A's are much more easily facilitated.

Baptism As The Pathway To Freedom

Last Sunday, my eldest daughter was baptised. It was an eventful event for more than the obvious reasons but its best left unsaid. Having spent most of my Christian life convinced that only adult baptism was valid, it took me a while to warm up to the idea of baptising a child. It was quite a journey in which a lot can be said. Nonetheless, due to my current fatigued state of mind,

I'll leave that for another day. Here's a thought from the Dutch priest and writer, Henri J. M. Nouwen, that might give you an idea why I finally shifted to viewing baptism from an ordinance of the Church; ie. an outward expression of faith; to a sacrament; ie. a visible act that convey God’s forgiveness, life and salvation through words and physical means :

When parents have their children baptised they indicate their desire to have their children grow up and live as children of God and brothers or sisters of Jesus, and be guided by the Holy Spirit.

Through birth a child is given to parents; through baptism a child is given to God. At baptism the parents acknowledge that their parenthood is a participation in God's parenthood, that all fatherhood and motherhood comes from God. Thus baptism frees the parents from a sense of owning their children. Children belong to God and are given to the parents to love and care for in God's name. It is the parents' vocation to welcome their children as honored guests in their home and bring them to the physical, emotional, and spiritual freedom that enables them to leave the home and become parents themselves. Baptism reminds parents of this vocation and sets children on the path of freedom.

Anwar's statement on the meeting with PAS yesterday:

PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA, 23 SEPTEMBER 2008

On Tuesday I met with Pakatan Rakyat leadership from PAS in Kota Bharu, Kelantan and from DAP in Kuala Lumpur. Kelantan Mentri Besar Nik Aziz Nik Mat and PAS President Hajji Hadi Awang reaffirmed their commitment to the spirit and the goals of the coalition and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng expressed his satisfaction in the progress being made to strengthen and broaden the consensus among the Pakatan Rakyat parties and supporters from BN.

We also discussed the next steps that Pakatan Rakyat should take towards forming a government that reflects the support of the majority of Members of Parliament. Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi's failure to accede to our request for an emergency session of Parliament represents another attempt by the UMNO-led BN government to sabotage and scuttle the democratic process.

Methodist Church in Malaysia Statement

Following the recent Quadrennial General Conference of the Methodist Church in Malaysia, the following statement was adopted :

The Methodist in Church Malaysia held her 9th Quadrennial Session of the General Conference at Kota Kinabalu from 15-20 September 2008. 100 delegates and staff from the six annual conferences in Peninsular, Sabah and Sarawak gathered in conference with guests and Bishops from regional Singapore and Indonesia , the UK , Australia and the USA.

During the conference, the current Bishop Dr Hwa Yung was re-elected for another term of four years. In his episcopal address the Bishop challenged and called the church to practise scriptural holiness and to transform the nation. While deliberating on the mission of the church and her strategies for the next quadrennial, the conference also expressed with deep concern some of the issues that continue to plague the nation, calling for earnest prayer and considered action thereof. BERNAMA attempts a spin on an op-ed by the Jakarta Post, with sites like the Malaysian Insider faithfully reproducing it. The original Jakarta Post piece, however, paints a somewhat different picture.

Light At The End Of The Tunnel?

As I mentioned yesterday, the constitutional process has finally begun. Despite the Prime Minister's refusal to convene an emergency session of Parliament as requested by Anwar Ibrahim, it merely serves to delay the inevitable. The former is now facing the unenviable task of surviving a vote of censure. It no longer is a question of "if" but "when".

His Majesty the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong is also able to request that the Speaker re-convenes Parliament for an emergency sitting if so required and according to some sources a request has been made to Istana Negara seeking an audience with His Majesty. The same source provides some hypothetical scenarios that can be played out.

Malaysiakini carries an op-ed that opines that the current impasse is finally heading towards a climax. It quotes a political analyst from the Singapore based Control Risks Group as saying :

It may be approaching the end game. All the strategies they have been able to come out with are almost all played out except for the final few .. I think there is still a lot of uncertainty but Anwar is looking like he may pull it off."
Even the equities market seem to be responding positively to the new scenario that has unveiled itself over the last 24 hours (then again, it could be due to the capital infusion from the various central banks).

Nonetheless, how it ultimately plays out will still very much depend on the incumbent. As CPPS chairperson, Ramon Navaratnam, puts it:

"If Anwar's 31 seats are real, then it is the coup de grace. That will be the end of the era of the BN. Abdullah will be saluted for letting the democratic process take place and for not stifling the country with arrests and emergency rule. It will be his finest hour and he will go down in history as the man who liberalised the democratic system in Malaysia,"

Anwar's Statement - Emergency Parliamentary Session Called

This is the text of the statement made by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim about an hour ago:

Today Pakatan Rakyat leaders have submitted a letter to the Prime Minister requesting him to call an emergency session of Parliament to deliberate a motion of censure against the leadership of YAB Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi no later than Tuesday 23 September 2008.

This is in accordance with Order 11(3) of the Standing Orders of Parliament and warrants an immediate response given the gravity of today’s political impasse. A delay in his response would be interpreted as nothing short of a further sabotage of the democratic process and abuse of Executive Power.

The Prime Minister’s haggling on the syntax of our first letter is puerile at best. The intent of our meeting as described in that letter was clearly to discuss the future course of the nation’s leadership – though in deference to his position and in accordance with acceptable norms we remain considerate and polite in our approach.

Motion Of Censure Tabled .. Emergency Parliamentary Session Requested

Ladies and gentlemen, the constitutional process has begun.

1445 - "We have the list and we have offered to show it to the Prime Minister. He refused to meet and has abused us. We are now going to show the list to Parliament. What else do you want us to do? Do you want us to release the list here and allow the people to be harassed? Are you going to post guards for them to ensure that they don't? This is their request, not mine." - Anwar Ibrahim (pseudo ad verbatim)

1442 - Anwar reiterates that the safety of the MPs is a primary concern and is the main reason why he has refused to divulge the identities of the defecting MPs in advance. The identities will be known, both to the Prime Minister as well as the nation, when the vote of no confidence is taken.

All legal and constitutional means will be exhausted to seek the resignation of the Cabinet.
1430 - Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that an official letter has been sent today to the Prime Minister seeking an emergency session of the Parliament no latter than Tuesday, 23rd of September, to debate a motion of censure / vote of no confidence against the government led by Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. This is in line with the standing orders of the Parliament.

He has described the crass rejection of his first letter to seek a meeting and the subsequent threats against him as puerile and has called the current government as a minority government.

The first official and legal move in seeking the resignation of the current Cabinet has begun.

Baling Batu Sembunyi Tangan

melantik seorang Perdana Menteri;

tidak memperkenankan permintaan bagi pembubaran Parlimen;
