Not a bad accompaniment since this is National Bible Month after all. And basically Jeffry S. They can be quite difficult to come by this side of the Nusantara.

I'll be migrating this blog over to an upgraded version to fix the problem with the commenting and publishing over the weekend. I haven't decided with Wordpress or Movable Type yet, so its still a coin flip. Let's see how it goes.

Oh yeah, I just realised I forgot to wish all my Muslim friends and readers :

I was recently asked by a friend of mine to work on a proposal to set up their website and one of the elements I was to include is a tool that would facilitate real time discussion and the sharing of tools and resources as well as training tools. Having been involved in some level of marketing online over the last few years, one of the first few things that came to my mind were web conferencing and webinars.

What exactly is a webinar? Wikipedia defines webinars as:

A neologism to describe a specific type of web conference. It is typically one-way, from the speaker to the audience with limited audience interaction, such as in a webcast. A webinar can be collaborative and include polling and question & answer sessions to allow full participation between the audience and the presenter.
One of the disadvantages I've found working in collaborative working on an online environment are the limitations that e-mails, and instant messaging applications like Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger, etc, in demonstrating concepts or explaining more complex issues. In a face to face environment, I'd have the advantage of being able to use whiteboards, mahjong paper, LCD projectors and more to highlight points. Coupled with the fact that one would actually be dealing with people face to face, discussion and Q & A's are much more easily facilitated.
I remember when I used to work with an organisation that required me to travel to conduct training sessions on Content Management Systems or communication tools for advocacy. By being physically there, I was able to monitor and keep track of what the participants were doing in the process and evaluate their level of comprehension as well as my effectiveness as a trainer. In comparison to the e-mails and instant messaging trainings that I use more frequently nowadays, I feel like I'm working blind.

People generally tend not to ask questions and fumble along which would translate into ineffective training and wasted time and resources for both the trainees and me. This in itself already negates the fundamental requirements for such trainings - that people understand what you're communicating to them, and that you are able to have some mechanism to note the indicators that people are keeping up with you.

That's where tools that facilitate webinars would be useful and makes me want to seriously reconsider deploying it in future training opportunities, especially when it involves presenting to a larger audience. Some of the benefits that I can already see are:

Reduction in travel costs. I don't have to travel to where the participants are, nor do they have to travel to where I am

Ability to mobilise a larger group of participants. I am able to access a more diverse group of participants from different locations without them having to be in one place

Ability to mobilise a larger group of resource people - as above, they don't need to be in one place at the same time

And what seems particularly attractive right now is that it doesn't really cost as much as I thought it would. The learning curve required for participants is also almost non existent. If they know how to use instant messengers, they can already participate.

One of the providers of webinar services that I recently came across is MeetingBridge. As a hosted service, the participants don't even need to download any additional software for web conferencing and webinars. I just need to :

Set up the webinar
I set up a landing page (see example here) that will allow me to promote the webinar to potential participants, register them (exportable as an Excel spreadsheet), and even charge a registration fee if necessary (the payment is processed and managed by MeetingBridge

Gather the audience
I just send an e-mail invitation out to my intended audience and link them to the landing page described above. They can register directly via the landing page and keep it bookmarked for use during the date of the webinar

Register the participants
As participants register online, I am notified by e-mail and can also review the participant's details online. I am also given the option to pre-screen the audience by setting it in such a way that I manually approve each participant. The system will also send an e-mail reminder to participants a day before the webinar proceeds

Webinar preparation
I now can decide how I want to interact with the audience. Audio, text messaging as well as video are available as options. MeetingBridge will also assign an event specialist to help me get things started and do a dry-run before the actual webinar. This event specialist will also be present in the event to monitor the call in case I need any further assistance.

Follow up
After the webinar is completed, I will then receive an e-mail listing all the participants for follow up if necessary. If I opt for the webinar to be recorded, I can also send the link to the recording to the attendees as well as people who may have missed the event.

Considering that MeetingBridge's going rate is as low as US$0.15 (approximate RM0.50) per minute/participant, that's not too bad especially since I have the option of charging a nominal fee for participation which can offset the charges. It is definitely much cheaper than flying to Medan or Banda Aceh.

Remind me to thank my friend who got me started on doing this research in the first place :)

Last Sunday, my eldest daughter was baptised. It was an eventful event for more than the obvious reasons but its best left unsaid. Having spent most of my Christian life convinced that only adult baptism was valid, it took me a while to warm up to the idea of baptising a child. It was quite a journey in which a lot can be said. Nonetheless, due to my current fatigued state of mind,

I'll leave that for another day. Here's a thought from the Dutch priest and writer, Henri J. M. Nouwen, that might give you an idea why I finally shifted to viewing baptism from an ordinance of the Church; ie. an outward expression of faith; to a sacrament; ie. a visible act that convey God’s forgiveness, life and salvation through words and physical means :

When parents have their children baptised they indicate their desire to have their children grow up and live as children of God and brothers or sisters of Jesus, and be guided by the Holy Spirit.

Through birth a child is given to parents; through baptism a child is given to God. At baptism the parents acknowledge that their parenthood is a participation in God's parenthood, that all fatherhood and motherhood comes from God. Thus baptism frees the parents from a sense of owning their children. Children belong to God and are given to the parents to love and care for in God's name. It is the parents' vocation to welcome their children as honored guests in their home and bring them to the physical, emotional, and spiritual freedom that enables them to leave the home and become parents themselves. Baptism reminds parents of this vocation and sets children on the path of freedom.

Anwar's statement on the meeting with PAS yesterday:

PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA, 23 SEPTEMBER 2008

On Tuesday I met with Pakatan Rakyat leadership from PAS in Kota Bharu, Kelantan and from DAP in Kuala Lumpur. Kelantan Mentri Besar Nik Aziz Nik Mat and PAS President Hajji Hadi Awang reaffirmed their commitment to the spirit and the goals of the coalition and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng expressed his satisfaction in the progress being made to strengthen and broaden the consensus among the Pakatan Rakyat parties and supporters from BN.

We also discussed the next steps that Pakatan Rakyat should take towards forming a government that reflects the support of the majority of Members of Parliament. Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi's failure to accede to our request for an emergency session of Parliament represents another attempt by the UMNO-led BN government to sabotage and scuttle the democratic process.

Nevertheless I along with my colleagues in Pakatan remain confident that the people's desire for change shall soon be attained. We will proceed cautiously towards our goals and we agreed neither to be provoked into hasty action nor to take an irresponsible approach that would lead to instability and greater uncertainty in country. I am not aware of any negotiations taking place between Pakatan Rakyat and the Prime Minister—statements made yesterday suggesting that a line of communication was open were misinformed.

There is a crisis of confidence in the current leadership of the nation at a time when the Malaysian people are demanding solutions for the highest increases in prices in two decades, increasing joblessness and the dramatic decline in investor confidence.

While the newly appointed Finance Minister boasts that the country is in sound economic standing, the facts tell a different story. In 2008 already over RM 125 billion has been withdrawn from the country by investors weary of a government that has failed to implement a single reform to ensure judicial independence and that continues to use draconian laws such as the ISA to detain its citizens without due process of law.

These basic reforms are cornerstones of Pakatan Rakyat's vision to revive the economy, to create more growth and good jobs for Malaysian people, to attract foreign investment, and to ensure adherence to constitutional guarantees including the position of Islam as the religion of the federation, the freedom to practice other religions, Bahasa Melayu as the national language and the freedom to practice mother tongue languages, and the status of the Malay kings and the special position of the Malays and bumiputera.

As I mentioned yesterday, the constitutional process has finally begun. Despite the Prime Minister's refusal to convene an emergency session of Parliament as requested by Anwar Ibrahim, it merely serves to delay the inevitable. The former is now facing the unenviable task of surviving a vote of censure. It no longer is a question of "if" but "when".

His Majesty the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong is also able to request that the Speaker re-convenes Parliament for an emergency sitting if so required and according to some sources a request has been made to Istana Negara seeking an audience with His Majesty. The same source provides some hypothetical scenarios that can be played out.

Malaysiakini carries an op-ed that opines that the current impasse is finally heading towards a climax. It quotes a political analyst from the Singapore based Control Risks Group as saying :

It may be approaching the end game. All the strategies they have been able to come out with are almost all played out except for the final few .. I think there is still a lot of uncertainty but Anwar is looking like he may pull it off."
Even the equities market seem to be responding positively to the new scenario that has unveiled itself over the last 24 hours (then again, it could be due to the capital infusion from the various central banks).

Nonetheless, how it ultimately plays out will still very much depend on the incumbent. As CPPS chairperson, Ramon Navaratnam, puts it:

"If Anwar's 31 seats are real, then it is the coup de grace. That will be the end of the era of the BN. Abdullah will be saluted for letting the democratic process take place and for not stifling the country with arrests and emergency rule. It will be his finest hour and he will go down in history as the man who liberalised the democratic system in Malaysia,"

This is the text of the statement made by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim about an hour ago:

Today Pakatan Rakyat leaders have submitted a letter to the Prime Minister requesting him to call an emergency session of Parliament to deliberate a motion of censure against the leadership of YAB Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi no later than Tuesday 23 September 2008.

This is in accordance with Order 11(3) of the Standing Orders of Parliament and warrants an immediate response given the gravity of today’s political impasse. A delay in his response would be interpreted as nothing short of a further sabotage of the democratic process and abuse of Executive Power.

The Prime Minister’s haggling on the syntax of our first letter is puerile at best. The intent of our meeting as described in that letter was clearly to discuss the future course of the nation’s leadership – though in deference to his position and in accordance with acceptable norms we remain considerate and polite in our approach.

I find the Prime Minister’s comment about me in his press conference yesterday to be reckless and irresponsible in light of the disastrous outcome of last Friday’s ISA raids.

He has conflated what is essentially an issue of democracy, freedom and the rule of law with national security. The use of the ISA to harass and detain duly elected political opponents is a grave transgression of the law and its continued use would further erode confidence in the current government and exacerbate political instability.

As the incumbent Prime Minister actively holding office and exercising all Executive powers, and as the outgoing Finance Minister, we hold him fully accountable for the current political turmoil and mismanagement of the nation’s economy. His accusation that I have had an adverse impact on the nation’s economy is entirely without basis.

I have met with the key fund managers in the region, representing over USD 1 trillion in assets, and on multiple occasions they were unanimously in support of comprehensive reforms in Malaysia including judicial independence, a free media, a more professional police force and anti-corruption agency, investor friendly laws and assurances on the non-interference of politicians in the governance of Bank Negara. These are policies Pakatan Rakyat has promised to implement– and initiatives that the current administration has done virtually nothing to advance since March 8th.

ANWAR IBRAHIM

De-facto leader, Keadilan
The text of Order 11(3) of the Standing Orders of Parliament reads (HT: Tricia):

If, during an adjournment of the House, it is represented to Tuan Yang di-Pertua by the Prime Minister that the public interest requires that the House should meet at an earlier date than that to which the House was adjourned, Tuan Yang di-Pertua shall give notice thereof forthwith and the House shall meet at the time stated in such notice. All legal and constitutional means will be exhausted to seek the resignation of the Cabinet.
1430 - Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that an official letter has been sent today to the Prime Minister seeking an emergency session of the Parliament no latter than Tuesday, 23rd of September, to debate a motion of censure / vote of no confidence against the government led by Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. This is in line with the standing orders of the Parliament.

melantik seorang Perdana Menteri;

tidak memperkenankan permintaan bagi pembubaran Parlimen;

Muhyiddin said that according to the constitution, the prime minister was to be appointed among those entrusted by the majority of the people in a general election and an MP having the command of a party (Bernama).

atas nasihat Perdana Menteri, Yang di-Pertuan Agong hendaklah melantik Menteri-Menteri lain daripada kalangan ahli mana-mana satu Majlis Parlimen;

Perkara 43 (4)

Jika Perdana Menteri tidak lagi mendapat kepercayaan majoriti ahli Dewan Rakyat, maka Perdana Menteri hendaklah meletakkan jawatan Jemaah Menteri melainkan jika atas permintaannya Parlimen dibubarkan oleh Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Hakikatnya jelas.

Renungkanlah.
