Augsburgian Catholic?
Just a brief thought ..
So how do we refer to ourselves as a Church who’s primary influencer was adamantly opposed to having it named after himself? Considering that those who affiliate with the Church generally agree that the 3 ecumenical creeds and the Augsburg Confession form an adequate summary of the Christian faith and yet affirm the catholicity of the Church, why not Augsburgian Catholic?
“Lutheran” was originally a pejorative term; somewhere along the lines of, “Don’t listen to him, he’s a crazy *&^%$ Lutheran.” After a few years of resistance, Lutherans gave up and accepted it. It’s easier to say than Melanchthonian, ie. Philip Melanchthon, the principal theologian in the whole shebang. Luther was primarily the pastor and the celebrity figure
Luther himself suggested “Evangelical Catholic”.
Interestingly, a proposal was mooted during the negotiations that eventually resulted in the formation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to name the new entity the Evangelical Catholic Church. I guess it was a bit ahead of its time then.
Well, those of us here in Malaysia still have a bit of time. Since there are four Lutheran denominations in Malaysia alone, perhaps some effort should be made towards some form of institutional unity. Then, perhaps, we might see some interesting monikers being thrown up for consideration.
Augsburgian Catholic anyone?
