Should I List On This Directory?
Some of you know that I provide web hosting services; primarily to non profits; as well as domain registration services. It generally has been based on word of mouth promotion over the last year or so that I’ve been providing this service but I am considering whether or not I should try listing in some industry directories.
One such directory that I’ve come across is located at http://www.webhostingchoice.com. It is a pretty simple to use directory service that allows the user to do a pretty detailed search based on user defined criterias, like bandwidth allocation, price, disk space and more.
There is also a user contributed rating system which can be both a good and a bad thing for a hosting service provider. On one hand, satisfied customers can be pointed to the rating system and encouraged to give you a good rating. That would naturally make you look good to prospective buyers who use Web Hosting Choice as a tool to compare web hosting packages. One the other hand, it isn’t too difficult for someone, say like this blog’s resident troll, to sabotage you as well by using multiple logins and spoofed IP addresses to give you negative ratings.
What I really like about Web Hosting Choice is that they provide a pretty good; albeit somewhat concise; learning centre that is useful for people who are new to the idea of web hosting to figure out what its all about. Compared to what I had to go through way back in the late 90’s, I dare say one’s learning curve is significantly reduced with this feature.
Anyway, this is something worth mulling about if I plan to go a little larger with my web hosting services. A little extra publicity really wouldn’t hurt.
