Thinking Of Diversifying My Hosting Portfolio

Some of you know that this blog together with a few other sites are hosted on a server managed by a friend and myself. The original idea was to provide affordable hosting and web development services to non-profit organisations and advocacy NGOs.

Having been in this industry for quite a while (has it been 10 years already?), I thought it was a little something I could do with relative competence for causes which I feel strongly about. I was also somewhat scandalised by the costs incurred in relatively easy-to-deploy technology by NGOs due to the lack of experience and expertise.

This server has actually served me quite well but it appears that I’m running short of bandwidth and memory for me to allocate additional space to new clients. That was when I started looking out for new bulk hosting providers. Why not stick to my current one? Well, load bearing is a good reason – by having new servers set up on different backbones will allow me to set up back-up mirrors for existing sites to minimise downtime. This is something that I’ve been considering and would probably provide in the near future.

Anyway, in the process of checking out the available packages, I was offered to do a review of Lunarpages Coupons.

Lunarpages is a web hosting company that has been around for quite a while – since 2000 to be exact. They boast a database of more than 100,000 customers with infrastructure on three datacenters – One Wilshire in Los Angeles, California and Marquisnet in Las Vegas, Nevada and Riverside, California. This generally means good news to me as our backbone is directly connected to the West Coast of the United States and this means better connectivity and speed.

Having checked them out a bit further, I found that this company has generally been quite well reviewed by the industry. What caught my attention was the fact that they were rated the Best Dedicated Host by Host Critique. I generally am in the market for dedicated hosting and this is a good start.

They also have pretty good starter packages for those who may not meet my non-profit criteria. Their hosting packages start from $6.95 / month (approximately RM 23.00 / month) which is actually pretty good considering they are offering 350 Gb of storage space and 3500 Gb of data transfer!

And with the free discount coupons offered at Lunarpages Coupons with values up to $50.00 (RM 166.40), it seems like good news all around.

This host is definitely going into my shortlist.
