I was recently checking one of my referral statistics and was pleasantly surprised to see a sale credited to me from BetterWorld
. The purchaser most probably clicked the link that I put up on this post.
While its just a small amount (approximately US$1.50 or RM5.00), I'd like to say thanks to whoever is it who did the purchase. I hope you'll find their service satisfactory and give them a good rating at Rapleaf. I've made at least 4 orders from them so far and been pretty happy to date. It usually takes about 3 - 4 weeks for delivery (including the time spent at the Customs).
For the benefit of those who are unaware, BetterWorld is an online bookstore with a twist. Specialising in second hand books, the prices there are already quite low (starting from US$3.48 or RM11.70) and a lot of the titles there are very difficult to find in Malaysia. This, of course, is not just what's unique about this bookstore.
- Shipping Rate
They have a flat shipping rate of US$2.97 (RM10) per book anywhere in the world. Shipping to the United States is free. - Funding Illiteracy
A percentage of every purchase goes towards funding illiteracy programmes in what they term as their Triple Bottom Line:- Social
Funding literacy initiatives through direct donations from generated revenue to organisations like Worldfund (Latin America), Room To Read (Asia), Books for Africa (Africa), and the National Center for Family Literacy (North America). - Environmental
A small surcharge of US$0.05 is levied per order to fund carbon offsetting programmes using Carbonfree™ Shipping. They work with Carbonfund.org for this purpose. - Economic
They help fund job creation programmes and ensure that they themselves remain self sufficient social venture in order to maintain job availability.
- Social
As I've mentioned before, social entrepreneurship is one complementary aspect of social advocacy and activism that is sadly lacking in Malaysia. There are definitely models here that we can emulate.
