My boss, Irene Fernandez, finally won her defamation lawsuit against Utusan Malaysia (see Malaysiakini for details). This comes in the heels of the recent victory garnered by former ISA detainee, Abdul Malik Hussin, against the Government of Malaysia and the Royal Malaysian Police for unlawful arrest and assault.
On a related front, Haris Ibrahim, the lawyer and outspoken advocate for human rights in Malaysia, submitted a petition addressed to His Majesty the Yang Dipertuan Agung at 10.35 am this morning containing 5,036 signatures seeking for the convening of a Royal Commission of Enquiry into the erosion of public confidence in the Judiciary and the V.K. Lingam video aka the Lingamgate scandal.
After sharing a brief account of my experiences when Operasi Lalang occured on October 27, 1987 and how it started me on my journey, it got me wondering if there were others who could also count that incident as instrumental in developing their social consciousness? So my question would be :
What effect did Operasi Lalang have on you?
Please do leave your thoughts and reminiscence in the comments.
Oh yeah, don't forget about the People's Hearing on Operasi Lalang and the conversation on Politics and the Kingdom tomorrow. Both these events are spaced sufficiently apart and the venues sufficiently near to each other for you to make both.
